Working Equitation Clinic
May 4th
Working Equitation (WE) is a fun multi discipline sport. Based on the southern European way of working cows and classical horsemanship it is currently the fastest growing equestrian sport in the US. It is open to all breeds and styles of riding and places an emphasis on training and partnership. The sport consists of 4 phases; dressage, ease of handling (aka obstacles with finesse), speed and lastly working cows as a team. Most competitions in the US only include the first 3 phases.
This clinic will focus on the Ease of Handling (EOH) phase. A full course of obstacles will be set and riders will ride in small groups of three to give each rider plenty of space and time on the course. Private lessons can be arranged separately if there is time or on the day after if there is enough interest.
Both total newbies and seasoned competitors are welcome! Riders new to WE will work on introducing the obstacles, the basic criteria and rules, and the skills required to negotiate the obstacles. Everyone will start in walk but can progress to trot and canter if feeling up for it. At the Intro level riders walk most obstacles and trot between them so the sport is very inviting to those who are just getting started! Experienced competitors will work on refining the skills, course work, and perfecting any obstacles that they are struggling with.
About me (Kyra Gautesen). When I first saw WE I was instantly hooked and jumped right in! I attended one of the first judges seminars in the US with the top International judges as well as spent time riding in Portugal with Pedro Torres and Pedro Neves. Besides a little competing myself I’ve been organizing events and training and teaching WE for going on 8 yrs now including teaching at the first cross national WE camp. I love the camaraderie and inclusiveness of the sport for the riders and I love seeing horses thrive and enjoy the obstacles. Besides my experience in WE I have trained and competed through 4th level dressage (USDF Bronze), Intermediate level eventing and FEI Advanced level combined driving all on mostly alternative breeds, unwanted projects or rescue horses.
I love introducing and helping to grow the sport and hope you will join in on the fun!
